Heaven Picks Only The Best
Memorial of Sts. Timothy and Titus
My dear encountered couple:
Paul learned a good lesson from what he had heard about Jesus Christ. He had learned that the best way to engineer success was to pick out good, responsible people to help you with your work. As a successful business man selects only the best to help his business grow and flourish, so Jesus had picked the best of the Jewish litter to help him establish his Church. Paul did the same with his work, the work of converting Gentiles.
On his journeys Paul had met and converted two men in which he saw exceptional qualities - Timothy and Titus. He made them bishops to take care of some Christian communities he had founded. They were to continue with the education of the Christians, protect their faith, and convert others. They were to prepare re-placements for themselves for when their term of office would end.
You and I have been selected to help in the support and building up of the Church. When I say support I’m not merely referring to financial support. I’m talking about the ways we conduct ourselves, the attitudes we convey to others, the love that should be seen in our words and actions. None of us was called by God to be in the Church just to take from it. We are to give, of ourselves, to others. In the words of Paul to Timothy:
“I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed on you when my hands were laid on you … Never be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, but with the strength which comes from God bear your share of the hardship which the gospel entails.”
God picks only the best qualified to help him with his work. That’s YOU. Congratulations!
