Together They Do It

Thursday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time

My dear encountered couples:

We have been taught that we were created in the image and likeness of God. And true that is. But sometimes we have a false notion of God and try to live in accordance with that notion. We try to live as we think God is. We try to live on our own power, with our own strength, according to our own will. This is not being like God.

God is one, yes, but also Three Persons in that One - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. They live and love and work in unison, not individually. Yes, there are things we attribute to each one of them. Like we attribute the act of creation to the Father, salvation to the Son, sanctification to the Holy Spirit. But what one of them does, they all do. All Three Persons in God create, save, and make holy. If we want to be like God, that means we must never try to do anything on our own without the help and in cooperation with others. Those others are often human beings we need to help us, but they are always to be first and foremost the Three Persons in God.

Whatever we do, we are to let God do it with us. We are to lean on God’s strength, use God’s wisdom, and face whatever it is with God’s courage. When we try to do things on our own and leave God out of the picture, we are not being like God, we are being like the Devil. “Come to me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome,” Jesus said, “and I will refresh you. Take my yoke upon your shoulders and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. Your souls will find rest, for my yoke is easy and my burden light.” Never try carrying life’s burdens by yourself. If you do, you are not being like the Three Persons in God.
