THE GOLDEN RULE
Thursday of the First Week in Lent
My dear encountered couples:
“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you.” How often we have heard that! How hard we have worked at trying to put it into practice! But that’s what’s it’s all about, isn’t it?
That’s what we are to do. Life is given to us to become loving people. We are to treat others royally, and become royal through doing it.
We are to treat God and people as we would like them to treat us. Maybe we should go even further than just God and people. How about all living things? How about animals? They can feel, you know. In some way, maybe they can think. Some of them might even have more sense than some of us.
Shouldn’t we treat cats and dogs, elephants and whales just like we would like to be treated if we were one of them? If you were a deer, would you like to be shot at during the winter time? If you were a rabbit, would you like to be sprayed hairspray in your eyes to see if it burns? We humans do these things, don’t we? Do you suppose God approves?
How about trees and bushes and plants? Do they have feelings? Some people think so. Some even think they can communicate with one another. How would you like to be treated if you were a tree, if you were a little flower growing by the side of the road?
“Treat others the way you would have them treat you.” THE GOLDEN RULE! How so very often we tarnish it!
