THREE REQUESTS

Thursday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time

My dear encountered couples:

Yesterday I mentioned about prayer being essential to keep the life of Christ alive and growing in us. If we don’t pray the life of the Son of God will suffer in us. Today Jesus tells us to pray for things: “Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.” We are only limited in our requests by how long we are here on earth.

What if you only had a very short time to live - like three days? And you were told you could make one request a day, what would you ask for? Would it be for a million dollars, a pretty face, someone to fall madly in love with you? Now remember: When the three days are over, so would be the enjoyment of those three requests. In that case, maybe you’d better ask for something more lasting. Like love for God and neighbor, a virtuous character, an eternity in heaven.

When we are young and think we are going to live forever, our dreams and prayers are more often than not for things of this world. When we find discounts being given us because of the age we’ve reached, thoughts of things of another world start making their ways into our minds. It is a world that we have drawn closer to. And those among us who are wise change our prayers from things of this world to things of the next.

What would you do if you only had three days to live and three requests you could make? Be sure to make them the wisest. Let us not waste the time we have left here knocking on God’s door for frivolous things.
