THE PARABLES OF JESUS

Friday of the Second Week of Lent

My dear encountered couples:

When Jesus had finished this parable we are told, “the chief priests and the Pharisees realized he was speaking about them.”

When we hear or read any of the parables of Jesus, we should examine them closely to see if he is speaking about us. Let’s face it. We all do things, improper things, that we don’t realize we are doing until someone points them out to us. Or maybe we do realize we are doing them and we need to be made aware of the unfavorable consequences we are someday going to have to face. The parables of Jesus are spoken to all of us so that if we find we fit into them anywhere we will have time to do whatever is necessary before it is too late.

Take today’s parable. Basically, it tells about God providing a lovely land for the Jewish people to live in. To show their gratitude they were to keep God’s commandments and abide by what his prophets told them. Often, they didn’t. And so, they were going to lose their country.

God has given us this world, our country, our homes, all that we have. What are we doing to show our appreciation? Are we taking care of what he has given us? Are we living up to the teachings of Christ? Are we treating each other with love and respect?

“The kingdom of God will be taken away from you,” Jesus said, “and given to a nation that will yield a rich harvest.” Who’s he talking to?
