Tuesday of Holy Week
My dear encountered couples:
“One of you will betray me.” That is what Jesus said to the apostles at the Last Supper. He was, of course, referring to Judas, but he could have been referring to all twelve of them. He could even have been referring to us. Anybody who has ever sinned has betrayed Jesus Christ.
If you had a friend for whom you lived every moment of your life, for whom you were willing to even die, and that friend was two faced, did things not in your interest and behind your back, lied to you, used you, made promises to you that were seldom kept, would you feel hurt when you found out about it? Jesus is our friend, our best friend, he was Judas’s best friend too. Look how Judas paid him back for his friendship. He was actively and consciously instrumental in arranging the preliminaries that led up to the crucifixion of Jesus. So are we whenever we sin.
Jesus died in the 1st century by crucifixion. The sins now committed by us in the 20th century helped do that to him. When we are about to do something sinful let us imagine we are present with Jesus at the Last Supper, and listen to him as he says,
“‘I tell you solemnly, one of you will betray me... ‘Lord, who is he?’ Peter asked. ‘The one to whom I give the bit of food I dip in the dish.’ He dipped the morsel, then took it and gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. Immediately after, Satan entered his heart.”
If you ever catch yourself about to sin, pause and look up. Maybe you’ll see Jesus offering you a little taste of food.
