COME TO ME!

Wednesday of the Second Week of Advent

My dear encountered couples:

Both our readings today speak of our growing weary and being sustained by the strength of God.

“Though young men faint and grow weary, and youths stagger and fall, they that hope in the lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles’ wings; they will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.” “Come to me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you.”

We all experience days when we would like to chuck whatever it is we are doing and head for faraway places. We all have times when we just want to go to bed and forget it all. We’ve had it. We’re tired, frustrated, and disgusted.

Those are the moments both Isaiah and Jesus are talking about. Those are the times when we are to look to God for rest and renewal. But sometimes we might find that God doesn’t merely perform an energy miracle and back to work with enthusiasm we go. God often gives us the energy we need by working along psychological and physical lines.

We might need a jog around the block, a ride through the country-side, a few hours at the mall. We might need a succulent meal in an atmospheric restaurant, a movie, or maybe just a chair by the fire and a good book.

Besides a blast of heavenly grace, God often tells us to do something different from our usual routines. That’s why he created Sundays. We all need a day off. Do your best with God’s help to take one when you know you need one.
