I Don't Want You To Learn More

Thursday of the 16th Week in Ordinary Time

My dear encountered couples:

There are millions of people in our country who are not able to read and write. Anyone wishing to learn can find where classes for interested adults are held. All it takes is desire and effort. Unfortunately, not everyone has the desire.

We all have abilities that we do not use to their utmost. One of them is our ability to think. It takes effort to think, it takes repeated effort to get into the habit of thinking. Have you ever lived with someone who is always asking, “Where are my shoes? Where is the sugar for my cereal? Where is the cereal?” They won’t even try to remember where they put them last.

Some people will ask the same questions every day, not even trying to recall yesterday’s answer. No wonder teachers get driven up walls. And so do members of families.

Jesus tells us, “To the man who has, more will be given until he grows rich; the man who has not, will lose what little he has.

When we use our brains, they become even more capable of working well. When we refuse to use them, they grow lazy and dull. This affects greatly our growth in the knowledge and wisdom of God. Pray and think and we get some of that knowledge and wisdom. Allowing what we hear to go in one ear and out the other is to remain in ignorance.

Jesus says, “Sluggish indeed is this people’s heart. They have scarcely heard with their ears, they have firmly closed their eyes.”

I hope he isn’t talking about us.
