Lord, Increase Our Faith
Memorial of Saint John Bosco, Priest
My dear encountered couples:
We have become so used to eating what is set before us that it seldom, if ever, enters our mind that the food we are eating might contain a speck or two of arsenic or Anti-Ant poison. Anybody who watches TV movies based on true life knows such things can happen. But certainly nothing lethal or toxic is going to be in any food served by your mother or mine - right? My mother loves me!
We not only have unwavering faith in what our mothers give us to eat, we show a lot of faith when we go into a restaurant where we have never been before and immediately dig in to what has been set before us by somebody we have never laid eyes on before. Who of us ever thinks of having what we eat scientifically analyzed before we eat it? If we get suspicious or paranoid over every bite of food we take, we might find ourselves starving to death. We exhibit faith when we eat; therefore, we get the nourishment we need.
The people of Nazareth did not exhibit faith in Jesus, so they did not get what he could provide for them.
We are told, “They found Jesus too much for them. ‘No prophet is without honor except in his native place,’ he told them, ‘among his own kindred, and in his own house.’ He could work no miracle there, apart from curing a few who were sick, so much did their lack of faith distress him.” How much faith do we have in Christ who loves us much more than even our own mothers? I hope we have at least as much as we have in restaurants. Faith in Christ is necessary to receive from him.
Lord, increase our faith!
