What's Your Order, Sir?
Wednesday of the Second Week of Lent
My dear encountered couples:
Servants are often looked down on. But where would we be without them? Whether we realize it or not, we all take our turns serving others – our spouse, our children, our in-laws, etc. or at least I hope we do.
It is when we add something to the lives of others that we are at our best. That is when we are like God. “Such is the case with the Son of Man who has come, not to be served by others but to serve, to give his own life as a ransom for many.” Those are the words of Jesus.
Serving is not a lowering. It is rather a raising to divinity. People serve one another, not only by waiting on tables and cleaning houses. Though these may be the most obvious ways, and ones whose benefits are certainly divine and needed by all, most everything we do that brings good into the lives of others is a manner of serving.
Those we now call saints worked at serving in every capacity we can imagine. From working around the home to laboring in the factory, from teaching in the school to defending the country - all are ways of serving.
The important thing is that we do them in God - with inner cheer and not grumbling. The important thing is that we let God do them through us. He wants to serve the needs of all. And he is not too proud to do it through any honest means.
So, be proud of what your work is. In trying to do it well, it is God doing it in you.
